Modernizing the 70s Sofa

What’s the old saying? The more things change the more they stay the same? While browsing through pictures of modern sofas that are on sale over the Internet, lo and behold what should appear… A sofa straight out of the seventies!

The 70s, 60s, and Beyond

Crate and Barrel has put out a piece of furniture entitled the Petrie sofa. You remember the Petries–Dick Van Dyke—Rob and Laura. Looks just like it! Minus the footstool that he repeatedly tripped over. Surprisingly, Ethan Allen has some affordable modern sofas as well. Pottery Barn has their own style of an Arlington sofa with matching throw pillows. West Elm, Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, Gus Modern and even Macy’s are designing and selling modern sofas that concentrate not only on style but affordability.

Retro—The Way To Go

Look around you and you will see styles that are reminiscent of a time when some of us were young. My mother used to tell me (and I thought she was crazy for it) “if you keep something along enough it comes back into style”. Mom was right. I sure do wish I had that set of living room furniture we used to live with when I was growing up. I could make a fortune selling it because it’s exactly what people are looking for… Yesterday.
Whether it’s recapturing your youth or making a Retro fashion statement—the only thing you need to modernize your 70s sofa might be some new upholstery.
